Two Jays
Blue Jays
in my tree
three Jays
five-Jay
family—
usually
so
solitary
***
Chickadees with their
pee, pee, pees
in the trees
flit and bounce
like fleas
feeding downy
babies
***
And Buick’s Wren
is here again
with resolute
intention—
a better
team there’s
never been
the perfect
nest, to raise
the kin
***
And maybe not
a lovely singer,
the Northern Flicker’s
the good luck bringer—
the piercing cry
across the sky,
the speckled breast,
the black necktie
***
Osprey circling high above
two together,
symboling love
***
Resident crows,
Balasz & Lorne—
in this place their
souls were born. Their
children’s children’s child
knows the good that
comes, the bad that
goes—
Always see beyond
the mask into the past
what came before,
the whence, the why, the
such hath come,
the nevermore…
***
The hummingbirds
a sheer delight—
minute magicians,
still in flight
***
And unassuming, dressed
in brown, they love the
dusty, dirty ground
their favorite place
to hop around—
the sparrow sings
the sweetest song
You’d never know
a note be wrong,
A virtuose in
plainest clothes
***
And finally, always
standing by, embodiment
of sea and sky, the gulls
lament— tormenter birds
scavengers that
rove in herds…
***
Oops, silly me nearly
forgot, my favorite one
in all the lot—
such dapper marks and
curt refrain, always glad
you’ve come again
The Nuthatch with the
reddest breast is my
mostest beloved guest
You zip through snatching
cakes and seeds, for you and
all the kindred’s needs
***
And all of this just
nature’s way
of showing us
her love display—
a feathered flute,
our heart’s delight!
Enjoining spirit,
song, and flight.
